1.
Ashkharah 03:24
This opening song is named after a surf spot in Oman and was written on September 18, 2016. The rhythm guitar strumming and intense tremelo picking have their foundation in traditional surf music territory, and are interspersed with some melodic down time.
2.
Boca de Pascuales got written on August 14, 2017, and is named after a pretty wild surf spot in Mexico. Nevertheless the song is the slowest on this first release by The Surfdales, making it the perfect dreamy after surf time evening soundtrack while thinking about the best moments of your day out surfing at Mexico’s Pacific coast.
3.
Chicama 03:41
This is the second song written for The Surfdales, and dates back to July 17, 2012. Chicama is a surf spot in Peru, famous for its 4 kilometers long surf wave along the coastline (depending on the conditions) which actually consists of 4 separate breaks. To put this into music for this song the vibrant leadpart in the middle repeats itself 4 times, followed by a much welcomed breakdown.
4.
Named after a Californian surf spot and written on June 6, 2017. Corona del Mar is a neighborhoud in the city of Newport Beach known for its fine beaches, and has attracted surfers as early as the 1920s. The tune is kinda slow and has a country & western touch.
5.
Montañita 03:39
Montañita got written in the first half of July 2012 as the first song for The Surfdales. It’s an uptempo tune, characterized by a mixture of guitar melodies based on a single theme. The finale climaxes in an exhausting twin lead guitar marathon. The song’s name is taken from a coastal village in Ecuador, popular with surfers since the 1960s.
6.
Mullaghmore 03:27
This one is named after a surf spot in Ireland, that gets waves up to 20 meters high. Mullaghmore was written on March 11, 2018, and despite the exciting surfing conditions at the actual surf location is quite laid back. It achieves a bit of suspense in the somewhat dark sounding lead breaks transitioning to a mid 1960s US West Coast jangle pop sound as popularized by the Byrds, and getting back to the upbeat and at times even (20 meters high!) uplifting nature of the first part of the song.
7.
Piha 03:00
Piha is surf spot in New Zealand about 80 kilometers west of Surfdale, located in the far north of New Zealand on the Tasman Sea coast. It was the place where in 1958 two American surfers introduced faster 2 meter boards instead of the traditional 4-6 meter Malibu long boards and by doing so laid the basis for modern short board riding. Because of the historical context Piha is the shortest song on this release and displays a raw and exciting edge. The tune was written on November 1, 2016.
8.
Tamarama 04:14
This was the third song for what later would be called The Surfdales, written on September 10, 2012. It got its name from a surf spot near Sidney, Australia, known for its narrow beach, deep coastal waters, rip currents and rocky point break. The song is quite laid back, with a moody yet upbeat atmosphere.
9.
Xing Tan Wan 03:10
Written on March 24, 2018, Xing Tan Wan is the most recent one on this first release by The Surfdales featuring Danny Ramirez without a microphone and playing an electric guitar. Named after a surf spot in China this tune follows a steady pace toward a lead guitar laden and percussive ending, making it a well serving and swell surfing closing track.

The Surfdales are a one-man instrumental surf band from Katwick Beach (Netherlands) by Danny Ramirez. He’s also the guitar player for stonerdoom band Toner Low and in the past played music ranging from garage rock to black metal in bands such as The Mad Löggers, Slaughter Towen and classic cover songs on punk rock band Only Entertainment. The Surfdales took shape in the first half of July 2012, when the first song Montañita was written. Later in July and in September 2012 two more followed, and between mid September 2016 and mid August 2017 four tunes got written. Finally in March 2018 the track listing for this first release by The Surfdales was completed with two more songs. The music of The Surfdales is inspired by the traditional Californian 1961-1964 surf sound with some hints to the instrumental music of around the same period as played by UK band The Shadows. Because there’s 1000s of instrumental surf songs out there and it therefore is impossible to know what’s been done and what not and while writing and recording I sometimes wondered ‘well, I’m pretty sure some surf band came up with this chord progression and lead melody decades ago’, I just recorded what I heard in my head without caring for possible similarities to existing surf tunes.
