about

'The classical mobile-killer-on-the-loose-theme is the basis for these lyrics. Because this seems to happen more often in the U.S. than elsewhere, the words are written around a country riff and a suitable pedal steel guitar melody. Several movies inspired me for this one. Like Kalifornia, From Dusk Till Dawn’s first half, Natural Born Killers and of course the classic love stories of Bonnie and Clyde, way back in the 1930s, and of Charlie Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate in the late 1950s. February 12, 2002, the title got changed to I'm Driving Home With My Shotgun Next To Me!, because this would be easier to understand when playing the song in a live setting. Of the I Shot A Man!-tape No Siesta! has been done at Ramirez gigs the most, but I'm Driving Home! takes the second spot -- albeit with a lot less performances (15-20 times). Although played in concert especially in the early years (with its live debut on December 24, 1999), also in later years the song was on the set list every now and then (including at two instrumental backing shows -- August 13, 2009 and March 30, 2012), most recently on February 14 and 17, 2017 (around the time the I Shot A Man! tape got uploaded to Bandcamp).'

lyrics

I'm going home
To where my heart belongs
For much too long I've been traveling down the roads
Helping out each motorist in car trouble
Their families are still waiting
For them to return home

Chorus:
I'm driving home with my sawed off next to me
I'll rob a store when there's one on my way
I steal a car when I think that's (it's) necessary
And those who resist
With their blood they'll have to pay

It happened a couple o' times before
So ev'ry car that takes me home sticks with gore
I don't have time to clean 'em all from bloodstains
But at least I am a long way on my way

Chorus
