'After having written so many songs about fictional serial killers and murder cases, for the most part of 2022 I had trouble coming up with new lyrics. So, since the release of the Highway Of Tears! EP in September 2022 was about true crime late November 2022 I decided to focus on more true crime lyrics. Although there are some other ideas up my sleeve that I have been working on since, in December I wrote this slow song about Maria Swanenburg -- also known as Goeie Mie (pronounced as 'goo-yuh me') -- who around 1880 poisoned over 20 people in the city of Leiden. Living close to Leiden and playing gigs and hanging out there regularly strangely enough I had never written a song about or inspired by Goeie Mie, but eleven days before the end of 2022 I finally did. Mary Had A Thing! was first performed live on February 5, 2023.'
